If you want to lose weight, but don’t have a lot of time to exercise, walking could be the solution. Everyone walks – whether it’s through the parking lot or around the block. All you have to do is walk more often in order to see a change in your weight.
Walking is also a great option if you are self-conscious about going to the gym or working out in public. You can really peel off the pounds in a simple, enjoyable way; walking to lose weight is a well-known method of exercise.
How Much?
Many experts recommend that you walk several days a week. If an hour a day sounds too intimidating, start slow and work your way up by adding a few more minutes every day. Some people are able to lose 20 pounds per year just by walking regularly. Once you get started, you should be able to keep burning calories until you reach your desired weight.
How Fast?
Don’t start off too quickly as you begin walking to lose weight; start your walk at a normal rate and gradually speed up. You should be able to feel that you are exercising – your heart rate should rise to about 60% of its maximum rate. You can estimate how fast you should walk by pretending that you are behind schedule for an important meeting.
When?
If you live in a hot climate, you’ll want to decide what time is best to begin walking to lose weight. Mornings and evenings are going to be cooler, and the more comfortable you are, the more likely you will be to go out walking the next day! Don’t make exercise any more difficult than it may already be. If you live in an area where it gets dark and cold in the early evening, you should walk during the late morning or the afternoon for a pleasant experience.
How Can I Make It Fun?
Most exercise is not high on people’s priority lists for one reason: it’s just not fun. However, if you’re walking to lose weight, you have plenty of opportunities to make your exercise regimen a joy. Try getting a friend to walk with you once a week for company. If you have a dog, take it along (on a leash, of course). Listen to music or the radio, or find an audiobook to keep entertained while you exercise.
