Many people believe that maintaining a weight loss diet means cutting off all fat content from their daily consumption. But, this is only half truth. Fat intake needs to be regulated for sure, but it’s the bad fats that you must avoid, not the good ones. The good fats are essential for health and must be included in diet.
What are the benefits of fat?
Did you know that good fats are actually an essential part of the diet? There are several evidences to prove that fat is actually good for body and it reduces the risk of heart attack. It also supports the sugar and insulin metabolism in the body and contributes to your goal of long term weight loss and maintenance. Furthermore, as good fats makes food taste better, it also paves your way for a healthier lifestyle.
However, it is important to understand and differentiate between the good and bad fats. In this post, I have created a list for you to know – what are good and bad fats?
The good fats…
Good fats include the monounsaturated fats, which are found in olive and canola oils, peanuts and other nuts, peanut butter, and avocados. The monounsaturated fats help in lowering the LDL cholesterol which clogs artery walls. It also helps to maintaining levels of the good HDL cholesterol which carries the cholesterol from artery walls and dumps it to the liver for removal. Omega-3 fatty acids – Polyunsaturated fats are also good fats and food that contains them includes:
- Coldwater fish
- Canola oil
- Flaxseeds
- Walnuts
- Almonds
- Macadamia nuts
People who eat more of omega-3s rich foods have fewer health problems and lower risk of heart disease and diabetes. Good fats also help to prevent/ treat depression, arthritis, asthma, and colitis.
The bad fats…
Bad fats include the saturated fats that are found in butter, fatty red meats, and full-fat dairy products. The trans fat are known as the very bad fats. This type of fat is created when hydrogen gas reacts with oil. Trans fats are known to be worse than saturated fats. They are bad for blood vessels, nervous systems and waistline. Bad fats are found in many packaged foods such as:
- Margarine
- Cookies
- Cakes
- Cake icings
- Doughnuts
- Potato chips
